Is it possible for an American citizen to get a visa at the border for Syria?

I haven't personally done it (yet) but have talked to many Americans who have gotten visas at the borders. And for under $40 verses $150 in the US! The downside is they make you wait there ALL day. The officials have to fax your application to Damascus & Damascus takes their sweet time in responding. Plan on 6-12hrs but Syria is supposed to be worth that wait!
