Is there benefit or risk of baby not taking the pacifier?

My 1 year old is constantly putting things in his mouth. I am beginning to think its because he only had the pacifier when he was first born (he just didnt take to it very well), or is this what 1 year olds do? I often think he was deprived of an oral fixation.
