Why ammonium phosphate is placed 2cm. below the soil during application as fertilizer?

Probably to give aerobic nitrogen bacteria the chance to oxidize the ammonium to nitrate. Nitrates are the preferred way plants absorb nitrogen from the soil. Liquid ammonia is also injected directly into the soil for the same reason.
